Amritsar Heritage Bicycle Tour

Our classic, easy-paced guided tour through an ancient palace, heritage streets, narrow bylanes and some of the oldest neighborhoods deep inside the walled city of Amritsar which are best explored on foot or our bicycles. Ride through the narrow winding streets with squares, buildings with domes and chattri that is indicative of the influence of Islamic architecture and Rajputana style. Explore some of the lesser-known hidden gems of the city with old temples, akharas, and, arguably, the first-ever Amritsar Shopping Mall before malls became cool. Taste & learn the traditional ways of preparing some of Amritsar’s most popular breakfast items, street food, and sweets.

What to expect

We will meet at the common assembly point at City On Pedals Backpackers Hostel in Rani Ka Bagh, from 10 min before the start time. We will start our tour once all the guests have arrived. After basic instructions and introduction from our tour leader, we will start our amazing morning and ride off to explore the city of Amritsar.

We will pedal through one of Amritsar’s poshest locations called the Mall Road which will lead towards our first destination, the Summer Palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, built during his rule in Amritsar, Punjab. We will discuss a brief history of Amritsar and how it was shaped during his rule as we explore the 2 centuries-old architecture of his palace, now also known as the Ram Bagh or Company Garden.

After a quick history lesson, we will ride towards our first and arguably one of the most popular breakfast shops in the city, Giani Tea Stall, best known for its Masala Chai since 1955. Riding along the busiest (slightly less busy in the morning) bridge of the city called the Bhandari Pull, we will now enter the ancient, walled city of Amritsar via the Gandhi Gate, aka Hall Gate.

After a few seconds into the walled city, we will make a quick stop at one of our favorite hidden gems of the city called Khairuddin Mosque. It is a hard-to-find and one of the lesser-known monuments of Amritsar, despite being at the center of the busiest market of the city. While spending a few minutes discussing the relevance of this place in the story of Indian Independence, we will absorb the calm and serene environment of this beautiful mosque.

Moving on, we will ride towards the Partition Museum aka Town Hall of Amritsar. We will take this opportunity to go back in history to learn in brief about the horror stories of the mass migration of the people of India and Pakistan during the event of Partition in 1947. Note that we just pass through this place and do not enter the museum. However, we highly recommend visiting this self-explanatory museum once the tour during your time in the city.

Riding along through the narrow lanes of the ancient city, we will reach a seemingly bizarre crossing with a 300 years old Banyan tree which pierces into nearly 5 different haunted houses. That, conveniently, is also adjacent to our next street food shop where we will get to taste an extremely popular and irresistible breakfast item of Amritsar called Poori Chhole, which is deep-fried bread served with a bowl of chickpea curry and a small amount of pickle.

After our mouthwatering encounter with an Amritsar’s culinary delight, we will ride towards our final hidden gem spot ie an ancient Shiva Temple, which also houses a mud wrestling arena. This traditional gym has been a practice ground many of India’s renowned wrestlers. Near this place, we will give ourselves to Amritsar’s most popular breakfast item called Aloo Kulcha, also known as the Amritsari Naan. It is a mixed vegetables stuffed bread which is baked in a traditional clay oven, soaked in an insane amount of butter and is served royally with a differently flavored chickpea curry and tamarind chutney or sauce.

We will then visit a fortress of one of the old kings of Amritsar, Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, where we will see an old market place reminiscent of an architecture full of brass ceilings, huge wooden doors, old terraces with a city view and a dried community well. Also known as Quila Ahluwalia, we will reimagine the life and times of the generations of locals who ran Amritsar’s first bustling marketplace and is unfortunately now in ruins. We now amusingly call this place an ancient Amritsar Mall before Malls became cool.

Moving towards the heritage street, we will make a quick stop at the Saragarhi Memorial Gurudwara, which was built by the British for the Sikh Regiment in the British Indian Army and depicts the heroic story of Saragarhi War of 1897.

On our way back, we will take one last break for a sweet-sweet, coma-inducing Amritsari Lassi with a topping of an ungodly amount of desi butter and cream at the famous Gian Di Lassi which has been serving generations of Amritsar.

From there, we will ride back to our starting place, making our way through a slightly challenging Amritsar traffic. After reaching our Backpackers Hostel, we will calm ourselves down and figure what all just happened in our memorable morning bike ride. We will bid farewell to all the participants, congratulating everyone on surviving Amritsar’s eclectic and chaotic architecture, culture and food.
